The publication, as designed

Independent perspectives.
Shared humanity.

A bold masthead, clear topic routes, and an immersive featured-story panel lead into a layered editorial homepage. The design gives both considered reading and new discoveries a place.

02 / Visual identity

Editorial structure.
Contemporary expression.

The project began with the rhythm of a cultural newspaper: a prominent masthead, a clear section hierarchy, lead stories, and supporting columns. The selected design evolved into a contemporary art-and-technology direction while preserving that editorial structure.

Dark plum grounds the pages. Cyan highlights navigation and reader actions; soft coral adds warmth to selected labels. Rounded image panels, fine dividers, consistent photography, and generous headlines hold the publication together.

Typography system

Understanding culture.
Exploring change.

System sans-serif for the masthead, headlines, and reading text: the site's native Apple / Segoe UI / Arial stack.

Monospace / Section & format labels

Scale, weight, and spacing create the hierarchy. Compact monospace labels make topics and editorial formats easy to recognise beside expressive, tightly spaced headlines.

03 / Information & experience

A publication with
many ways into a story.

The homepage combines featured articles, a lead-story grid, the latest posts, cultural coverage, editor's picks, a newsletter, and a full section directory. Its primary invitation is to read; participation and support follow naturally from the content.

01 / Discover

Featured stories

The image-led slider brings photography, headline, description, and story link together. Previous and next controls, direct story selection, thumbnails, and a visible pause action give readers control over rotation.

02 / Explore

Sections & search

Topic archives, cross-cutting themes, related articles, and search offer several routes through the publication. An “All sections” menu retains the full scope without crowding the primary navigation.

03 / Return

A continuing conversation

Newsletter signup, contributor routes, story submissions, volunteering, and organisational information give readers ways to stay involved beyond a single article.

04 / Editorial approach

Context, curiosity,
and care.

The editorial model makes room for researched analysis and lived experience. News, explainers, essays, interviews, criticism, and reviews serve different reader needs while sharing expectations of accuracy, context, and responsible representation.

Topic and format remain separate: a film review belongs within a subject area and carries a review label. This lets the publication grow without forcing every story into the same shape.

  • Useful article structureHeadline, standfirst, subject and format, author information, reading time, imagery, body copy, sources, and related reading.
  • Evidence and transparencySource links support attributed claims. Photography includes credits; edited or conceptual illustrations are identified when relevant.
  • People represented with careContributor stories and coverage should respect consent, privacy, and dignity. Personal perspective and opinion need clear framing.
  • AccountabilityEditorial standards, correction routes, accessibility information, and transparent support arrangements form part of the publication.

05 / Funding & participation

Support the work.
Keep the voice independent.

The growth plan centres on thoughtful publishing, a returning readership, and people willing to contribute stories, skills, and financial support. Funding should strengthen the work while preserving editorial independence.

Reader / Support

Donations

Support is intended to create more time for reporting and editing, make room for contributor voices, and sustain the website and newsletter. Verified payment arrangements are still being completed.

Community / Participation

Stories & skills

Writers, researchers, artists, and readers can contribute lived experience, pitch stories, volunteer, or explore partnerships. Submissions are considered through the editorial process.

Partners / Future development

Transparent sponsorship

The brief includes a route for advertising and sponsorship inquiries. Eligibility, labelling, and commercial terms need to be established before accepting arrangements.

The current organisational stage

Evolving Humanities describes itself as an independent initiative with a nonprofit mission, working toward a formal nonprofit structure. Its current support information names Remote and Holding as the parent company managing donations during development. The publication does not currently represent contributions as tax-deductible.

Supporting the initiative does not purchase coverage, determine editorial conclusions, or guarantee publication. Donation banking fields remain placeholders; confirmed instructions must come from the project.

06 / Build, growth & launch

From design concept
to a working publication.

The original explorable prototype established the editorial architecture, shared visual system, and connected page journeys. The project has since moved into WordPress, with the full publication available for signed-in development and a branded Coming Soon experience for public visitors.

  • Content foundationThe original collection covers 13 editorial categories with 65 articles. New work is now being added beyond that foundation.
  • Connected reading journeysThe current build includes category archives, article routes, related reading, a section directory, search, and organisational pages.
  • Newsletter connectionA custom WordPress connection sends signups to MailPoet, with confirmation and branded subscription-management pages.
  • Shared publishing identityThe masthead, topic labels, image treatment, navigation, newsletter, support pages, and footer carry a common design language.

The next stage

  • Develop the editorial rhythmContinue publishing useful, sourced work; refine story selection, archive presentation, and the balance across topics.
  • Grow reader participationMake contributor, submission, contact, and volunteer journeys dependable, with clear expectations and responsible handling of personal stories.
  • Complete organisational transparencyPublish verified structure, responsibilities, and support information as the nonprofit initiative develops.
  • Finish funding arrangementsReplace payment placeholders with confirmed instructions or a tested provider, then define sponsorship criteria and disclosures.
  • Prepare the public launchReview responsive layouts, search, accessibility, performance, email delivery, and subscription pages before opening the full publication.

The detailed design brief

A shared system.
Room for different voices.

Homepage, templates & content organisation

The homepage establishes the publication through its masthead, featured-story panel, topic navigation, latest articles, cultural stories, newsletter, editor's picks, mission, and section directory. Article templates should keep the reading column comfortable, make format and authorship clear, show image credits and sources, and connect readers to related coverage. Topic archives, search results, author information, and organisational pages are distinct discovery and support routes.

Photography, illustration & visual consistency

Image panels use consistent proportions and intentional crops. Documentary photography needs meaningful alternatives, captions, and visible creator or licence credits. Edited and conceptual illustrations should be labelled so readers understand their role. Images, headlines, summaries, and thumbnail navigation move together in the featured-story experience.

Accessibility, motion & small screens

The design brief calls for clear heading order, keyboard navigation, visible focus, readable contrast, and usable controls across desktop, tablet, and phone. Featured-story rotation includes a pause control and respects reduced-motion preferences. Stacked layouts, wrapping navigation, readable labels, and comfortable touch targets keep the editorial hierarchy intact on narrower screens.

Publishing workflow, ownership & growth

WordPress provides the editorial foundation, with permanent pages for the organisation and posts for the publication. Topics, formats, authorship, sources, and related reading should remain manageable as content grows. The roadmap includes reliable editorial permissions, backups, image optimisation, clear URLs, internal links, metadata, search visibility, and measurement of reader engagement.

Newsletter, privacy & launch readiness

The newsletter connection is in place, including signup confirmation and subscription management. The launch review should verify email delivery, consent, unsubscribe behaviour, and the experience after the Coming Soon gate changes. Contact delivery, contributor submissions, donation arrangements, privacy information, and public reading journeys also need to be reviewed before launch.
